Guatemala Finca Canalaj Julio Gómez

Finca Canalaj is a small farm located 1,850m above sea level in northern Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Julio Gómez stays in a small cabin on his property during harvest season because of the remote location of his farm which also allows him to oversee the picking and processing of the coffee without the extra work of traveling in and out of the mountains daily. This is very high elevation, and coffee grows well up high! The area is ideal for coffee production because of the unique climate available here including cool temperatures. The elevation and remoteness of the farm means that there is no vehicle access to transport the coffee down the mountain so it’s carried out by hand using a mecapal, a traditional tumpline used in many parts of Latin America to move heavy loads down mountains or across footpaths.
